Save Your Roots

November 19, 2020 by David Dean Leave a Comment

Save Your Roots

For the past 30 years the GrassRoots Festivals have been a part of your family and you have been a part of ours.

We have come together several times a year in the spirit of music, art and community, and what started as a benefit to support AIDS related causes has transformed into an engine for expression, creativity, education and critically weighing the issues of our time in order to create positive change in the community.

This feels like one of these times where all of this matters the most.

As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization we have worked very hard to keep this festival belonging to you, our fans, and each ticket purchased or volunteer hour performed has been instrumental to this mission.

We don’t have large pools of corporate sponsors as we have kept our festival an authentic experience, free from the boundaries of corporate influence. Each donation or ticket has ensured that this remains your festival, and for that the GrassRoots Festival Organization is very grateful for the generations of fans that have come together in this spirit.

Now, for the first time since the festival began 30 years ago, with an entire year of GrassRoots Festivals postponed, we need your support more than ever.

In order to raise the $100,000 needed to prepare for the 2021 season, the GrassRoots Festivals are bringing the spirit and essence of GrassRoots to your living room with Save Your Roots, a live stream event from the State Theatre in Ithaca, NY on Saturday, December 19, 2020.

So please save the date and help us launch the GrassRoots Festivals into the next 30 years by joining your GrassRoots Family to Save Your Roots.

Shakori Hills GrassRoots Virtual Festival Fundraiser

October 7, 2020 by David Dean Leave a Comment

The Shakori Hills Community Arts Center (SHCAC) will hold a virtual Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival October 8 through 11.

Carol Woodell, SHCAC board president said, “In this year of unprecedented global action to combat the Covid virus, we thought a virtual festival would help people escape to the hills of Shakori in their minds, since we can not gather in person.”

The virtual festival will act as a fundraiser for the 501(c)3 non-profit that functions as the steward of the 72 acre tract of land located in Pittsboro, NC.

To join, simply log-on to our Facebook, YouTube, or TwitchTV channels starting at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 8.

“Since the pandemic hit we have had to cancel two GrassRoots Festivals, which are our main source of revenue, in addition to the Hoppin’ John Old Time Fiddlers’ Convention, and multiple programs for children and families in Chatham and Orange counties. We have had several outside groups cancel their rentals of the land and experienced a virtual halt to all inbound lease inquires. This fundraiser will help us ensure the land is still there for generations to enjoy years from now, as they have for he past 18 years,”

SHCAC has set up two easy ways to donate to the organization, via PayPal or ThunderTix, which the festival ticketing system. If donors have purchased tickets in recent years they can use their ThunderTix log-in to simplify the process.

The virtual festival will feature archive performances from the Shakori Hill GrassRoots Festival, which started in 2003, including festival founders Donna the Buffalo and festival regulars such as The Del McCoury Band, Carolina Chocolate Drops, Jim Lauderdale, and Dr. Bacon.

A Beautiful Feeling, the GrassRoots movie that was recently selected for the Carrboro Film Festival, will kick off the festival on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. Immediately following the film the movie’s director and executive producer will join the stream for a live Q&A session.

Music will start Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and include a mix of audio and video throughout the day.

Viewers will experience at home performances by Ellis Dyson and the Shambles, The Shoaldiggers, Momma Molasses, Golden Shoals, Onyx Club Boys, Grand Shores, and The Tan and Sober Gentlemen.

“We want to thank all the bands who have donated their time and performances to this virtual festival. We encourage you to purchase music or merchandise from these band’s websites to help them endure this time in our history.”

Check the schedule page for the full list of performers.

Show Shakori Some Love

The Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance is a nonprofit festival which benefits the Shakori Hills Community Arts Center (SHCAC).

The spring and fall GrassRoots Festivals are easily the largest drivers of revenue for SHCAC with the spring bringing in roughly double the amount of benefit to the center.

Due to the cancellation of the Spring 2020 festival the programs and festival are in jeopardy. We need your support to help keep them going.

The SHCAC hosts music workshops and classes throughout the year as well as programs in schools. Programs like the Junior Appalachian Musicians, Roots in the Schools, Hoppin’ John, and the GrassRoots Festival will be impacted by the quarantine associated with the coronavirus.

SHCAC is a nonprofit in good standing with the Secretary of State of NC and enjoys a Gold rating from Guidestar, the world’s largest source of nonprofit information, for it’s transparency.

The SHCAC brings so much joy to the faces of children and adults alike, and we want it to continue to thrive. Most of the classes offered by SHCAC are low-cost and no-cost programs for children in rural areas of the Piedmont of North Carolina.

Please help us continue the mission of SHCAC to provide culturally significant arts, music and sustainability education and outreach to our local community and schools, while preserving the greenspace of the 72-acre Chatham County homestead.

Even if you can only give a little bit, it will go a long way.

Below are some ways you can support the Shakori Hills Community Arts Center, the presenting organization of the Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance:

1) You can donate via PayPal using this link.

2) Set SHCAC as your preferred nonprofit on smile.amazon.com and remember to log-in via that link when you do all your Amazon shopping.

This website works the same as Amazon and has all the same products as Amazon, however, you begin at smile.amazon.com and Amazon donates 0.5% of your purchase to Shakori Hills on eligible products.

      Amazon Smile Steps:

  1. Go to https://smile.amazon.com
  2. Log in
  3. Type in your Charity/ Organization – Shakori Hills Community Arts Center
  4. Start Shopping!

3) The third way you can help is by spreading the word on social media, for instance:

  1. Sharing our blog posts
  2. Subscribe to the Shakori Sessions Podcast
  3. Share photos and videos of your time at Shakori Hills and tag us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter
  4. Subscribe to the Shakori Hills YouTube Channel and send us your old video links so we can add to our Shakori Hills playlist.

With people working remotely and social distancing more than ever before, it is important to stay together as a community. We can help build the Shakori Hills online community, ensure the future of the Shakori Hills Community Arts Center, and spread the Shakori Love!

June 29, 2017 by Shakori Hills Leave a Comment

Get tickets here!

Our annual starry tradition is happening again, a wonderful evening of music, food, beverages, and family fun! The evening’s highlight will be a singer-songwriter circle featuring some great local musicians and songwriters. Each artist will share his or her unique musical talents one song at a time, then pass the mic to the next. This year our songwriters will be Charly Lowry, Rebekah Todd, Tommy Edwards, Big Ron Hunter, and Ashley Heath!

Opening up the night will be Carolina Pine Cones, a youth bluegrass band (ages 14-18) that performs throughout Raleigh and the Triangle area. The group met through the summer Bluegrass Jam Camps and year-round Youth Jams offered by PineCone, the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music.

As our new tradition goes…closing out the show will be our great friends from, Dr. Bacon! Dr. Bacon is a genre defying “Appalachian Funk-Rock” band from Asheville, NC playing an infectiously danceable blend of funk, soul, jazz, rock, blues, folk, hip-hop and more. The band features diverse instrumentation including: guitars, resonator, harmonica, bass, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone drums, trombone, kazoo and more.

We’ll have a nice roundup of local food trucks including Breakfast & Beyond and Ko Kyu, as well as Yee Haw Doughnuts. Our staff and volunteers will be serving up cold brews from Carolina Brewery, sangria from Fair Game Beverage Company, and cider from our new friends, Chatham Cider Works.

Bring the whole family (kids 12 and under get in free) and camp out under the stars! All profits from the event go directly to the Shakori Hills Community Arts Center to help advance our mission in the community.

GrassRoots Needs You

October 9, 2016 by Shakori Hills 8 Comments

Yesterday was one of the most hectic, nerve-racking, and yet most beautiful days I’ve ever seen at Shakori Hills! The morning began with a group of us in the main office deciding what the best plan of action would be to get our fesival-goers and ourselves through what Hurricane Matthew was going to throw at us. We’d been watching the weather, and could tell that we’d mostly just get wind and rain, but how much of each was unclear. We tightened the tents and went on the lookout for any danger that could occur. We thought about getting some generators, and we spoke to our scheduled bands. Once we saw that the conditions weren’t unlike some we’ve had in the past, we decided to move ahead with a schedule shift. We were still able to have most of the planned bands play.

As I left the office and joined the attendees outside, I saw an amazing group of folks still loving everything about the festival. Lots of folks still here, a good amount of them were families! I saw kids huddled on one side of the Coffee Barn making fairy wands and having a Craft Bazaar. On the other side, an old-time band had gathered and was growing in a cozy jam circle. Our food vendors were selling breakfast/lunch, and the coffee and cider were flowing. Folks were smiling, the festival joy was still there. My tension eased a bit, and I began to feel festival magic again.

Late afternoon in the Dance Tent, Darlingside (a band that’s never played with us before) didn’t let the rain get them down and sang enchanting harmonies to a packed house. Later, Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn blew us all away with their banjo majesty, their patience, and the sweetness with which they lifted us all. Our Miami bands who braved the storm and drove up in its path to be here had great shows as well!

Friends, this has been a rough festival. It will take us all a while to get back on our feet after this fall. Many folks decided not to come (understandably) because of the storm’s possibilities, ticket sales were at an all-time low. Our crew came together yesterday in an amazing way to make it so the folks still here would get an experience they’d never forget. Now, we need to ask for your help. Here are three good and easy ways:

  1. Come join us today! It’s a beautiful fall day, and we have an amazing lineup! Everything is going forward like normal. The grounds are not super muddy, and should dry up as the sun warms them. Our vendors are selling yummy food and very cool crafts. Come, bring the family and friends, and support our community. GET SUNDAY TICKETS HERE.
  2.  Give a tax deductible donation to the Shakori Hills Community Arts Center! Give in multiples of $10 (every little bit helps). The money will initially go directly toward Shakori Hills festival expenses. CHOOSE YOUR DONATION HERE.
  3. Get a Dream Team Membership! This, for the bargain price of $1000 gets you 10 4-day passes to any GrassRoots Festival; a Lifetime All-Access Lanyard for you and a friend to get backstage at all of the festivals, meet the bands, and enjoy backstage hospitality; and a $50 coupon to our GrassRoots Store (festival shirts, mugs, etc). These passes really help us get to the next festival and plan for more incredible music and moments for all of us to experience! GET YOUR DREAM TEAM MEMBERSHIP HERE.

Also, we did have a rough time here in NC, but one thing to really keep in mind is that there are always folks who are worse off who need our help. Haiti was hit straight-on by Matthew, many lost lives and the repair will take a long time. Think about sending help there as well. Here’s one way that we have found: The Lambi Fund of Haiti.

Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. We have always needed you, but we need you now more than ever. We hope to stick around for as long as possible for moments like these, and for many more. Stay tuned for more opportunities to help.

UPDATE: We have a fundraising platform! Check out our FUNDRAZR! And thanks again.

Peace,
Sara
